The Mayor of Epsom and Ewell’s Charities Committee 2013-2014

Revised 11 October 2013 Colin Taylor - Mayor

The Mayor’s Musical Challenge:

Write an Anthem or Theme Song for Epsom & Ewell.

Our Borough doesn’t have a recognised anthem, a signature tune or theme song. Not yet,

anyway, hence The Mayor’s Musical Challenge:

Can you compose something appropriate?

Entries can be anthems complete with words as well as music, signature tunes without

words or theme songs matched to existing tunes.

Successful entries will need to appeal to a wide variety of people of all ages and

musical tastes. Music of any style can be entered, but should be tuneful and of

lasting popular appeal, rather than follow a current trend of pop music.

Entries from people living in the Borough of Epsom & Ewell are encouraged, but anyone

can enter.

The closing date is 31st March 2014.

The outcome of the Musical Challenge will be announced in at an event organised by the

Mayor’s Charity Committee 2013-2014. If appropriate, some entries may be performed at

this event, either by the entrant or by the organisers. Appropriate entries may also be

performed at events organised by the Borough Council.

As well as the main category, open to all ages, The Mayor’s Musical Challenge has

separate categories for those under 18, under 16 and under 11 on 31st August 2013.

Certificates will be awarded to the best entries in each category and may also be awarded

to other entries of particular merit. There are no other prizes.

The incentive for entering is recognition as the composer of the Borough Anthem.

An entry fee is payable to cover expenses and to help the Mayor’s Charities 2013-2014,

which are Sunnybank Trust, MERU and Epsom & Ewell PHAB. Further details of these

local charities can be supplied on request to the Mayor’s Secretary at the Town Hall.

The entry fees are:

Under 11: £5

Under 16: £10

Under 18: £10

Over 18: £20

These fees are per entry. For a joint effort the age of the oldest partner applies.

Entries can be in any form – a manuscript or a recording in a recognised digital format.

By submitting an entry, the entrant (and their parent or guardian in the case of a minor)

must agree that this entry may be performed and/or published by the Borough and/or the

Mayor and/or the Mayor's Charities Committee without any charge for copyright, royalties

or performance charges etc. They must also warrant that the entry is not subject to any

such charges from a third party, or in the case of new words to an existing tune still subject

to copyright, they must confirm what third-party conditions apply to the use of that tune.

Entry forms can be obtained from the Mayor’s Secretary at the Town Hall.

Entry fees may be paid by cheque, payable to “Mayor of Epsom & Ewell’s Charities”.
